Photography? Me? Yes.

Hi guys,

So, that's it. College is over. These past two years have been incredible. I've met the most amazing people while studying for a course which I've absolutely loved doing.

I thought I'd do a post to say what part of the course I feel like I developed the most in throughout the last two years. It wasn't until the second year where I really found my feet and fully understood what I was doing and what I needed to do to get the best possible experiences and grades from the course.
During my first year, I muddled along. I met the deadlines where I needed to and picked the units (from the longest list ever!!) that 'looked' pretty easy to complete. Over the summer between first and second year I decided I couldn't do that anymore, especially if I wanted to get to university after the course. I then went back in September and had the mindset that I had to challenge myself, that I had to push myself to do the units I was frightened of doing in first year.

One of these units was 'Photography'. Now, within my course you were able to go down all types of paths with media, whether it be TV & film, photography, radio, journalist and also graphic design. After completing the media course, I want to go down the graphics route, specifically fashion graphics. A lot of that work included photographs, so I needed to develop more in photography to prepare myself for uni.

I had always watched from afar, people within my course who constantly chose film/TV/photography units and made the most amazing products ever. The thing with myself was, I was 'scared' of the camera. The cameras at college are Cannon DSLR and I had only been used to your average digital camera. I think that's what scared me the most. For one, even turning the camera on wasn't in the same place as what my old and battered digital camera was, not taking into account that I had to manually set up the aperture , ISO and shutter speed that is usually done automatically on the digital camera.

Once I had conquered how to actually turn the camera on I headed into the college's photography room to shoot my own photography shoot. I had always dreamed of shooting my own as I flicked through endless amounts of fashion magazines. My inspiration for my first photography shoot was 1990's Dannii Minogue as the theme for this unit was 'Document A Decade'. I chose this theme as I particularly love the fashion from the 90's.
I got a hand with setting up the photography studio from the photography tutor and then I was left with my model, the camera and tripod. I was petrified.

Overall the shoot came out better than what I expected. I feel like I really captured the 90's fashion vibe well and this was backed up with the comments that I had received from peers in my class, which really really pleased me. The photos wouldn't of turned out as great if my model wasn't as patient as what she was - Thank you so much!

I was so proud of myself for completing the shoot that I did ANOTHER!! I booked out the photography studio for my FMP (final major project). The aim of my FMP was to create a fashion magazine that was black and white magazine which completely stood out against other magazines on a typical newsstand.

I gave the magazine a black and white theme which I took to the photography studio with me. This theme would be consistent through the shoot right from the clothes the model would wear to the way the photos were edited after.
I added the photos from the result of the shoot into my magazine and chose a photo from the shoot for my front cover (which is featured below). Overall I felt that my photography shoot intentions were met and I'm so proud that I had taken these photos.

This also reflected on my final grade for my FMP. I had been determined since the beginning of second year that I would get one distinction overall in one of my projects. Throughout the year I was hitting merit criteria, which in itself was a massive leap/achievement for me. When I went in to get my results from my FMP and found that I got THREE DISTINCTIONS, I couldn't believe it. I had achieved my goal with three at one time! With these three distinctions it helped me get the overall grade for uni.

It has been a crazy two years, and that was just part of it. I am so blessed to be able to get the grades for uni. I will be moving to Southampton in September, over 100 miles away from home, but I have never been as ready for the challenges that lie ahead as I am right now. Just got to remember to keep pushing myself, I can do it and you can to!

Until next time, here are some images I shot for my FMP.
