From my previous post you have probably gathered that I love making magazine front covers, particularly fashion ones. I was planning how my fashion magazine would look for my final major project at college when I suddenly thought; has there been a black and white Glamour magazine made? That is when I began to research black and white fashion magazine covers. From my research I found out there has been a few, from the likes of Vogue, Jalouse and Flare, but none from Glamour magazine. With the idea of creating a black and white cover and the Brits being on TV recently, I began experimenting. Using a photo of Dannii Minogue (One of the most elegant dressed people there) I started to design. The photo itself was in colour which I managed to change to black and white. I adjusted the contrast levels and the brightness levels to get the image exactly how I would picture it being on the front.
One of the hardest parts of placing the text was what font style to use. As the photo has been changed to black and white this meant the text sometimes clashed with the photo behind and you were unable to see what was written. Sticking with my theme of black and white this restricted my text colours I would usually use. On a magazine front cover I would use a bright colour for the name of the magazine as well as the text placed on the front. I saw this as a challenge and a challenge well and truly accepted. To overcome this I changed the fonts a few times, adjusted them to bold, then off bold to see which looked best until I finally got it looking OK. Once I was happy with how the text was looking this is when I lined everything up to be the same.
Some parts of the cover have been changed. For example; the text has been spaced out more than it usually would be on a typical cover that is sold. This is because I wanted to make the cover more my own and not copy exactly what has been done already.
I now know why there aren't many black and white covers on sale, suggesting one of these being the time factor for creating the cover. I enjoyed the challenge and the black and white theme will be considered the style for my own fashion magazine, i'll be designing and writing in April/May/June. Black and white imagery has always looked so classy.
Let me know what you think of the cover being black and white, does it or doesn't it work? Would you think my own fashion magazine front cover could pull of the black and white theme?
